Over the last twelve years of working full-time in the dive industry here in Roatan, the question often arises. When is the best time to dive Roatan? That really depends on your schedule and what best fits your vacation time. When thinking of a caribbean vacation the vision of sunny and clear blue skies can entice the tilting back of your head while taking a deep breath. The ocean waves gently rolling over your toes as your feet sink into the white sand is also part of that. Ok, now open your eyes. It is a very soothing experience while the sun is shining bright on your face and you can feel the heat radiating all over your skin. Then we start adding things like cold Salva Vidas and Monkey Lalas and it starts to sound like we are in a Corona commercial where we have indeed chosen our beach. Those are definitely variables many likely consider when thinking of a destination for their next vacation. Roatan is fortunate to offer exactly that for the major part of the year.
No longer a hidden secret, Roatan receives thousands of visitors coming from all over the world. Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean have made this a highly coveted destination. Many of those who visit via the cruise ships come back for extended stays. Several individuals from that second visit end up purchasing real-estate and moving to the island. The point being that there are many months throughout the year in which the streets are filled with tourists. It is the high season.
Enter October which is technically within the rainy season. Some shops close down for the month and business really slows down. Ironically it is one of the best times of the year to visit for several reason. One, the diving is amazing. Here is a clip associated with the diving this last October, 2016. The visibility has been outstanding and the water is quite warm. The other thing which should help seal the deal for many is that the place is quiet. Although the whole diving with a bunch of people does not apply to Quality Time Divers unless they happen to be part of your family and friends to begin with. When visiting Roatan during October, divers will find themselves with many options all to themselves. Several hotels offer discounts on their room rates. Xbalanque for example, offered a 20% discount off the suites. The water temperature has been around 86 F, which is also an important variable.
When thinking about your next vacation, perhaps October will come up in your thoughts or discussion as The Best Time to Dive Roatan.
