With the goal of increasing the interest level of divers regarding Roatan as a destination, we are venturing out to help facilitate the addition of a new wreck dive to Roatan. Having zero experience doing such a thing makes for a welcome challenge. Having access to the folks who were instrumental in getting el Aguila and the Odyssey sank will likely prove to be the main reason we will get this accomplished.
Among the many considerations are locating the wreck itself. Apparently El Aguila wreck was purchased for $75 K. My goal is to see if the Honduran government is willing and capable of donating or acquiring one for the project. If we can manage to get buy in from the powers that be, things will go way smoother when it comes to receiving permits and following all protocols for sinking a ship and creating a new artificial reef.
Currently there are a couple of wrecks which are regularly visited by divers who visit Roatan.
El Aguila Wreck
The sinking of the Odyssey;
The Josie J
A planned wreck sunk by Coco View Resort in January 2004 in front of French Cay in French Harbour.
